Are you looking to celebrate BC Rivers Day by advancing your skills on the river?
River Culture Kayaking (RCK) out of Squamish is collaborating with the UBC Varsity Outdoors Cub to bring paddlers into more challenging waters. They supply all necessary gear rentals including boat, paddle, sprayskirt, PFD, helmet, splash top & wetsuit. Students are welcome to use personal gear if suitable and approved by the instructor.
We will depart UBC Vancouver campus likely on the morning of Friday, September 20 to make use of Friday as the first instructional day.
Sign up is through the Varsity Outdoors Club, of which students must be members to access the trip agenda page. Due to the inherent risk of entering class III water potentially for the first time, the class limit will be placed at 8. If the course does not fill up one to two weeks prior to the date, sign up will open for non-VOC members directly through the RCK webpage.
Here's how their website describes the course:
This three-day program is for people that know they want to be a whitewater paddler and already have some foundational skills. This course goes nicely with having just done our Intro to WW course, something similar with another school, or maybe your friends have taught you the basics.
We aim to progress your basic skill set and get you more capable & comfortable in your boat to start paddling some Class 2 to 3 whitewater. With 3 days to work with we'll be able to put a big focus on rolling, as well as eddy turns, ferries, scouting, and immersion safety. We'll work on getting you to the next step through practice and repetition. This course will also consist of coaching and feedback on each paddler’s specific needs and abilities as we paddle down the river.
Event Fee: $220
