Webinar | Leveraging fun: An introduction to the ORCBC’s new guidebook to building thriving outdoor recreation communities
From Cumberland to Tumbler Ridge, rural towns are embracing outdoor recreation for economic diversification and community building. To get there, each one had to figure out its own formula, but now a breakthrough guidebook produced for the ORCBC offers a blueprint for success. Our May webinar will show you how to make the most of it.
Authors Lauren Rethoret and Sarah Breen, from Selkirk College, will join us to unpack the new resource, Outdoor Recreation for Community and Economic Development: A guidebook for rural British Columbia communities. With the guidebook scheduled for release in early May, this is a timely opportunity to hear from the authors about key recommendations and how to use the guide’s features and tools.
The hour-long, interactive presentation will include a question and answer session, as well as a case study with a rural BC community actively working to grow its outdoor recreation economy.
For anyone interested in nurturing outdoor recreation, this guidebook is a catalyst for change, offering practical advice, tools, and case studies to inspire and guide rural communities. The webinar will help you make the most of it.
Support Our Webinars
As a non-profit organization, we rely on supporters to keep our programs, resources, and advocacy going so that BC can have enjoyable and responsible outdoor recreation opportunities. A tax-deductible donation today makes a big impact for the outdoors tomorrow.

Webinar | Wildfire resilience: How outdoor recreation groups can lead in mitigation and preparedness
What happened in Jasper and Los Angeles shows that forest fires can impact any community. The time to prepare and mitigate the risk is now. As the stewards of the urban-wildland interface, forest fire mitigation and disaster preparation is something the outdoor recreation community is uniquely positioned and experienced to take on. What that can look like is the topic of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC’s April webinar.
In a one hour panel discussion we’ll unpack the importance of preparation and mitigation, how recreation groups can get involved, possible funding sources and more. Our speakers are ideally suited to the conversation.
John Paolozzi is the communications officer for Wildfire Prevention with the BC Wildfire Service. He will speak about Fire Smart activities and provincial funding for mitigation projects.
Kevin Kriese is the past chair of the Forest Practices Board, a wildfire resilience consultant and is the trail coordinator with the Bulkley Valley Cross Country ski club, where he has worked on fuel treatment projects.
Anyone interested in helping their community become more forest fire resilient will leave the meeting with valuable insights and information. We hope you can join us.
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC is a non-profit organization. These webinars are free, thanks to the support of our generous donors and sponsors. If you would like to support our work, make a donation or get in touch about sponsorship opportunities.
