Share the Trails Workshop
On March 13 ORC was pleased to have the opportunity to jointly sponsor a third annual Share the Trails Workshop with the Horse Council of BC in Richmond.
The workshop was attended by more than 50 trail enthusiasts, with some coming from as far away as the Robson Valley. The main part of the program was a presentation about the Sunshine Coast Trail, which stretches 180 km from Sarah Point in Desolation Sound to Saltery Bay.
Hugh Pritchard, Director of the Powell Lake Outdoor Learning Centre, Eagle Walz, President of the Powell River Parks & Wilderness Society, and Paul Kamon, Marketing Director of Sunshine Coast Tourism, described how this amazing trail was developed and the way in which various community resources were harnessed in the process.
In the afternoon session, John Hawkings, Director of Recreation Sites & Trails BC, briefed those present about the development and start-up of the Provincial Trails Advisory Body. He also provided some of the background to the August 2014 changes in the management by the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations of BC`s rail trails. Those attending then had an opportunity to discuss John`s presentation in small groups after which there was further discussion in plenary session.
